Bargaining stalls in Niagara Parks Commission talks

OPSEU plans early January strike vote after employer tables concession demands and files for conciliation.

Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE)Toronto (23 Dec. 2009) - Contract talks between the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) and the Niagara Parks Commission have stalled and the employer has filed for conciliation.

The union will seek a strike mandate from its members in early January (on dates to be announced).

Despite the best attempts of the bargaining team, the employer has refused to entertain any substantial union proposals. It refuses to respond to issues such as job security, scheduling, seniority and hours of work, issues identified as being top priorities for employees.

"The employer’s position so far is to table concessions in layoff language, benefits scheduling, leaves and an attempt to introduce a two-tier wage system for seasonal members," OPSEU says.
