Cadillac Fairview engages in flagrant union-busting

Multi-billion-dollar company is wholly owned by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.

Toronto (27 July 2009) - Union-busting doesn't get any more flagrant than this.

Four weeks after locking out trades and maintenance employees who refused to accept demands that would have cut jobs, forced workers to re-apply for their positions, restricted union representation and undermined bargaining rights, Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd. has fired all 61 of the workers affected, including those on sick leave and disability.

All are long-term employees, averaging more than 20 years of service with the company.

Cadillac Fairview has assets of $16 billion dollars and is wholly owned by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. This last fiscal year was Cadillac Fairview's most lucrative year ever with nearly $1 billion in profit. Company properties include the TD Centre, Eaton Centre, Pacific Centre and Sherway Gardens.

Bob Huget, Ontario vice president of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP), has condemned the company's tactics.

"A number of these people have committed their entire working life to this employer and to be tossed out on the street and terminated as if they had no rights whatsoever is simply outrageous and we won't stand for it. This is nothing less than union busting," Huget said.

The employees were locked out June 14 and fired this week. The union has filed bad faith bargaining charges at the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB). Hearings are scheduled for July 31.
