Candidates pledge to improve N.B. health care

Liberals would add 55 more doctors and double the number of health care clinics and nurse practitioners.

New Brunswick Conservative Leader David Alward (left) and Liberal Premier Shawn GrahamFredericton (2 Sept. 2010) - Liberal Premier Shawn Graham, campaigning for re-election on Sept. 27, is calling for more doctors, nurse practitioners and community health centres to fix the New Brunswick's stressed health care system.

Graham made the announcement while campaigning this week. David Alward, leader of the opposition Conservative party, has also said the province would get more doctors if he becomes premier. He has not given full details of his health care plans so far.

Graham is proposing to add 55 new billing physician numbers, 30 of which will be aimed at family doctors. (A physician needs a billing number in order to be paid by the N.B. government.) The premier says his government has attracted a net increase of 170 doctors over the last four years.

Graham also said the number of community-based primary care clinics will be doubled to 30 from 15 and the number of nurse practitioners from 55 to 110 if he is re-elected.
