Carewest bargaining for HSAA members continues

Bargaining continues for HSAA/NUPGE members employed by Carewest.

Edmonton (20 Jan. 2012) - The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) exchanged initial proposals on Oct. 11, 2011 with the bargaining representatives of Carewest and met several times throughout November.

As is most typical in the earlier stages of bargaining, non-monetary issues have been reviewed, discussed and dealt with first. Monetary issues will be dealt with at a later stage of bargaining.

To date, some progress has occurred and tentative agreement reached on some articles but the negotiating committee observed there was little progress in later meeting. Carewest has once rejected the majority of HSAA/NUPGE's counter-proposals already. The union has resubmitted its proposals and anticipates a response when negotiations reconvene.

The negotiating committee is also monitoring the progress of provincial negotiations with Alberta Health Services, including how the eventual outcome and pattern of such negotiations will influence and establish a pattern for our bargaining with Carewest. That set of negotiations is currently at mediation.

HSAA/NUPGE is also attempting to finalize with Carewest the implementation of terms/conditions of employment for new paramedical technical members recently organized by the union pending the conclusion of these contract negotiations.
