HSAA heads drive to dump Telus Sourcing Solutions

Online petition asks that Alberta private sector firm be fired after 'more than four years of chronic and unacceptable payroll errors.'

Edmonton (24 Feb. 2009) - The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE), working with two other provincial unions, has launched an online petition encouraging Alberta Health Services (AHS) to end its contract with Telus Sourcing Solutions Inc. (TSSI).

United Unions - Telus Sourcing Solutions Petition

HSAA drafted the petition in cooperation with the United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) and the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).

The action is a joint response by the unions to "more than four years of chronic and unacceptable payroll errors by TSSI," says HSAA president Elisabeth Ballermann.

"When hundreds, if not thousands, of members are impacted by chronic payroll issues, something has to be done," she says.

"These issues do not only affect HSAA members, but members of all three unions. Together we represent more than 110,000 Albertans employed in the health care industry, and it's time we said enough is enough."

Contracting out disaster

TSSI was contracted four years ago to provide payroll, benefits and Occupational Health and Safety administration for the Calgary Health Region. No other health region contracted out these services.

In that time, there have been constant errors - overpayments, underpayments, no pay for several pay periods, members dropped from benefit plans and more.

"We understand that mistakes occasionally happen. But no where else in the province are HSAA members subjected to such a chronic level of problems with their pay," Ballermann says.

Now that the AHS has created a 'Superboard', employees fear that TSSI's role may be expanded to include the entire province.

All employees of AHS are invited to participate in this petition. It calls on the Alberta Health Services Board (AHSB) to cancel the contract with TSSI for Calgary, and to prevent TSSI from going province-wide.

The petition can also be completed online or downloaded in PDF format by visiting www.unionsunited.ca. The deadline for completion and/or submission of the petition is March 9.
