Kenora Developmental Services rally supports bargaining

“We are here for our team,” said bargaining unit spokesperson, Joel Sinkins. “Developmental Services workers at KACL are standing solid until we get the fair contract we deserve.”

Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU)Kenora (1 Nov. 2011) - More than 30 workers from Kenora Association for Community Living (KACL) carrying picket signs and flags held a rally as their bargaining team negotiated through two days of conciliation on Oct. 25 and 26. The workers are members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE).

Local TV, radio and print media all came down to cover the event, adding pressure to the need for a fair outcome at the table.

“We are here for our team,” said bargaining unit spokesperson, Joel Sinkins. “Developmental Services workers at KACL are standing solid until we get the fair contract we deserve.”

The high-energy rally inspired a number of members to drive around the community with union flags on their vehicles, honking their horns in an enthusiastic show of support.

Attendees included members from a wide range of areas within the organization, from daycare workers to group home service providers and home services.

Of the 125 staff at KACL, more than half only have part-time work. As workers struggle with heavy workloads and difficult shifts, waitlists in Kenora continue to be a problem for community members living with developmental disabilities.
