Ottawa (31 Mar. 2014) — The Health Accord that was reached ten years ago between the former Liberal government and the provinces expires today, March 31. The current Conservative government, without negotiations, has decided not to renew the agreement.
The Canadian Health Coalition (CHC) and allies have chosen March 31 as a national day of action to kick off a campaign for a new Health Accord. Events are taking place in over 40 communities across Canada, including a luncheon in Ottawa with Dr. Jeff Turnbull, past-president of the Canadian Medical Association, as well as a concert in Toronto with several Canadian artists, including Shirley Douglas. As part of the campaign launch, actor Kiefer Sutherland, the grandson of Tommy Douglas, has narrated a short video in defence of Canada's Medicare program.
Federal government withdrawing from leadership role in health care
Critics see the expiry of the Health Accord as a signal that the federal government is withdrawing from playing a leadership role in Canada's health care system.
“We are sounding the alarm to alert Canadians to the fact that the Harper government is not providing federal leadership in health care. This will lead to a fragmentation of services across the country, and access to care will depend on where you live and your ability to pay,” says Michael McBane, national coordinator of the CHC.
Instead of coordinating a national action plan for health care, the only plan is to cut health transfer payments and shift the risk onto provinces and patients.
Medicare tour travels Canada
The Canadian Health Coalition will follow up the day of action with a Medicare Tour, visiting eight cities across the country and meeting with citizens at community events, public forums, and workshops. The tour features Alex Himelfarb, former Clerk of the Privy Council to three prime ministers, and Wendell Potter, former vice-president of Communications for CIGNA, one of the largest American health insurers.
