Labour history among courses offered by CLC

Themes this year also include leadership, problem solving, retirement and steward skills.

New Westminster (7 July 2009) - The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) will offer a series of courses for trade unionists at The Justice Institute of B.C. in New Westminster on Oct. 24.

The courses are part of the congress' ongoing education series. The themes this year include leadership, problem solving, labour history, retirement and steward skills.

The deadline for registration is Oct. 14.

Labour History: Almost one third of Canadian workers are unionized and enjoy better wages, benefits, pensions, union rights and working conditions than non-unionized workers. This course studies some important events faced by the working men and women who won union rights and the implications these struggles have for current and future struggles.

Steward 1 (Basic): This covers the basics of how to identify and handle complaints and grievances and teaches the steward's role in protecting and building the union.

Facing Management: This workshop reviews a variety of management styles and strategies and outlines ways to develop appropriate and effective union responses.

Retire in Style: Thinking of retiring? This workshop offers valuable information and  tools to help make important choices about retirement.

Approaches to conflict: In the past few years, many new problem areas have arisen that cause conflicts within the workplace and within unions: psychological harassment, changes in work organization, budget cuts and downsizing. This course helps identify particular conflicts and offers specific strategies to deal with them.
