MGEU paramedic members receive wage increase through arbitration ruling

Winnipeg (03 Nov. 2015) — After going more than a year and a half without a new contract, Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) members of Local 911 (Paramedics of Winnipeg) recently received a general wage increase through arbitration.

Ruling reaffirms paramedics and firefighters should be receiving the same general wage increases 

The arbitration decision reaffirms the principles outlined in three previous arbitrations: Winnipeg paramedics should continue to track the general pay increases received by Winnipeg firefighters.

“It’s very important that our paramedics continue to be recognized for their vital and expanding role in our health care system,” says MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky. “The arguments our union presented translated into a strong arbitration award, so I’m very pleased for our members of Local 911.”

New health benefits added as a result of the arbitration

The union was also able to secure additional health benefits for members through the arbitration. Further details on those benefits and the ruling will be on the agenda at upcoming Local meetings to be held within the next few weeks. A summary of the arbitration ruling and meeting notices are being prepared and will be mailed out shortly to Local 911 members.

MGEU/NUPGE representatives will be setting up meetings with the employer to discuss the timelines for providing retroactive pay to members.
