Minister’s acknowledgement good news, says NAPE

'NAPE is looking forward to a collaborative approach.' - Carol Furlong.

St. John’s (18 Aug. 2009) - The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) has welcomed remarks by Joan Burke, minister of child, youth and family services, acknowledging that social workers must be able to focus more on genuine social work.

"For years, social workers have been challenging a bureaucracy that clearly did not address systemic problems," says NAPE president Carol Furlong.

"Social workers have had to spend so much time on other duties, including administrative work, that it has been impossible for them to dedicate the necessary time and energy to their clients,” she says.

"All stakeholders have a valuable role to play in trying to make this system work. NAPE is looking forward to a collaborative approach with Minister Burke and her officials to ensure a more effective system that includes manageable caseloads and realistic policies, which take into account the real challenges of child, youth and family services."
