National Union sends condolences to family, colleagues of Arizona fire fighters

"We are acutely aware of the importance of this work as well as the dangers and risks these brave workers face. Their sacrifice must be recognized by all of us!" James Clancy, National President

Ottawa (5 July 2013) - The National President of the 360,000 member National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), James Clancy, has written the President of the Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona to offer condolences over the deaths of 19 fire fighters at the Yarnell Fire.

Their sacrifice must be recognized by all of us!

"I want to extend our condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the Granite Mountain Hotshots fire fighters who lost their lives while fighting the Yarnell Hill fire," wrote Clancy.

"My union represents many women and men who work as first responders and wildland fire fighters. We are acutely aware of the importance of this work as well as the dangers and risks these brave workers face. Their sacrifice must be recognized by all of us!"

Contribution of wildland fire fighters often overlooked

Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a tragedy for the public to be reminded of the important role that these workers play.

According to Clancy "Far too often the general public is unaware of the contribution these workers make to protecting property, wilderness and wildlife. Even less consideration is given to the dangers they face and the sacrifices they make to serve the public."

Commends union for role in helping families and fighting the fire

Clancy also wanted to recognize the role that the union plays in aftermath of a tragedy such as this.

"In addition, I want to commend the efforts of the PFFA to assist in both finding resources to fight the fire and in supporting the family, friends and colleagues of these fallen workers," Clancy wrote.

"The role that unions play in the aftermath of these tragedies is often even more ignored than the workers they represent.

"Once again, on behalf of the 360,000 members of the National Union of Public and General Employees, please accept our deep condolences on the loss of these brave fire fighters. We will think of them often."
