Nipissing staff layoffs "regrettable"

“We are saddened by this development, but we appreciate that Nipissing is working with the union in an effort to minimize the impact on staff throughout this process." — Rob Boulet, President, OPSEU Local 608, Nipissing University.

North Bay (24 March 2015) — "The loss of 16 support staff positions at Nipissing University reflects a regrettable lack of government support for post-secondary education," said Rob Boulet, President of Local 608 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE).

“We are saddened by this development, but we appreciate that Nipissing is working with the union in an effort to minimize the impact on staff throughout this process. This will involve relocating some members and reassigning others. Four of the positions were vacant, but there will be 12 fewer people here by the time we are through,” said Boulet.

This phase of layoffs of support staff is expected to save the university $500,000, although the full impact through the bumping process is not known at this time.
