NSGEU welcomes St. Francis Xavier employees

Support staff at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish vote to join provincial public sector union.

Halifax (7 Dec. 2009) - The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) has welcomed a new group of employees at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish to its provincial membership.

NSGEU began organizing administrative, clerical, technical and non-professional library workers at the nationally-recognized university last June and a vote supervised by the Nova Scotia Labour Board was conducted in October. Ballots were counted last week.

“We are very pleased to welcome these new members to the NSGEU," says union president Joan Jessome. "They will find a home here among our locals at other universities and colleges across the province.”

Jessome says the union is looking forward to setting up the new local, electing a bargaining committee and beginning the preparations for bargaining a first collective agreement with the university.

NSGEU also represents support workers at Dalhousie University, the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (NSCAD), Cape Breton University, St. Mary’s University, Mount St. Vincent University and Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC).
