One year later - NSGEU continues its work on psychologically healthy workplaces

NSGEU/NUPGE celebrates successful first year of the National Standard, promoting employees’ psychological health and preventing psychological harm due to workplace factors.

Halifax (20 Feb. 2013) — In January, representatives of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) travelled to Toronto to attend the celebration of the first year of the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace. The event was organized by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC).

NSGEU/NUPGE plays a major role in combatting bullying and psychological abuse in the workplace

NSGEU President Joan Jessome, Director of Negotiations and Servicing Robin MacLean, Health & Safety Officer, Paul Cormier, and Bully-Free Workplaces Coordinator, Susan Coldwell joined approximately 200 stakeholders from organizations across all sectors and sizes, the mental health community, and members of the media, to celebrate the impact of the Standard one year after its launch.

While in Toronto attending this milestone event, the NSGEU/NUPGE also began its participation in a Case Study by the MHCC. The union is one of 30 organizations selected to participate, and the only union selected. The MHCC will be following NSGEU/NUPGE for a three year period to study how the union implements the Standard over that period of time.

Mental Health Commission of Canada is holding webinars to help create psychologically healthier workplaces

The MHCC is holding monthly free webinars with mental health experts and organizations who are moving toward a psychologically-safer workplace. Presented on the last Wednesday of every month at noon ET, the webinars take stock of what employers are already doing to improve the workplace, as well as providing the opportunity to brainstorm ways to continue momentum.
