Ontario hospitals taking action on OSHA changes

76 hospitals surveyed across Ontario in advance of new Occupational Health and Safety Act amendments.

Toronto (27 Sept. 2010) - The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) has released a workplace violence survey of 76 hospitals across the province.

The survey was initiated in September 2009 by the Joint Central Committee on Health and Safety (JCCHS) in anticipation of amendments to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). The purpose was to determine the status of policies, procedures and measures concerning workplace violence.

A questionnaire was e-mailed at the time to chief human resources officers, CEOs and co-chairs of Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs). Questions were related to key changes contained in the OSHA amendments, which came into effect on June 15, 2010.

"It is clear that much work has been done but there is still more to do to ensure that effective measures, procedures and training are in place to protect all workers in the acute care hospital sector from the hazard of workplace violence," the report concludes.
