Saint Mary's staff vote to accept new contract

Support Staff with Saint Mary’s University (SMU) in Halifax voted 90% in favour of accepting a new contract. The 163 members of NSGEU/NUPGE Local 79 work in clerical, secretarial, technical, and library operational support roles.

Halifax (1 Sept 2004) - Support Staff with Saint Mary’s University (SMU) in Halifax voted 90% in favour of accepting a new contract.

The 163 members of NSGEU/NUPGE Local 79 work in clerical, secretarial, technical, and library operational support roles were in a legal strike position. However, today Local 79 members voted to accept a tentative agreement reached on Monday August 23.

“I’m happy to see this matter resolved,” said NSGEU President Joan Jessome. “I want to congratulate all the Members of Local 79 for their hard work and their strong support of their bargaining committee.”

The three-year deal provides wage increases of 3%, 3% and 3% and a step adjustment providing an additional 3.2%. Members also receive a $100 signing bonus. The new contract includes much-needed language related to job harassment and a review, and if necessary, replacement of the job evaluation process.
