Strike action at BCIT

BCIT support staff have been working without a contract since June 20, 2010.

Vancouver (06 Nov. 2012) - Strike action by support staff is taking place at the main campus of the B.C. Institute of Technology (BCIT) today. The buildings being struck are SW1, SW2, SW3, and SW9. Pickets will be along the west side of all four buildings and the north side of SW1.

But regardless of the location of the pickets, these four building are completely struck.

Members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) who do not work in these buildings are instructed to report to work as usual and to refuse to perform any work that requires entry to these four buildings.

BCGEU/NUPGE members who work in these buildings are to report to the main entrance of SW1 for picketing instructions.

Part-time studies courses in the evening (after 5:00 pm) will not be affected at any of the BCIT campuses.

There are 434 BCIT support staff at the Burnaby campus, represented by the BCGEU/NUPGE. BCIT support staff include administrative assistants, graphic artists, buyers, technicians, cashiers, clerks and receptionists.

On October 29, BCIT support staff voted 89 per cent in support of strike action to back their bargaining demands. BCIT support staff have been without a contract since June 30, 2010.
