Tentative deal reached at Participation Lodge

Strike action called off as tentative agreement reached.

Toronto (14 Nov. 2012) -  Members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) Local 235 reached a tentative contract with Participation Lodge after both sides met on November 11. The picket lines have been called off, pending a ratification vote to be held on November 13.

“I want to personally congratulate all of our members who stood strong during a long and difficult strike,” said OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas. “This tentative agreement is a testament to their solidarity.”

“We are recommending this agreement to our members,” said Paul Johnstone, an OPSEU negotiator. “These workers put everything they have into defending quality public services for the people they serve in Owen Sound, Hanover and the surrounding area. It has been a difficult time, but they can all be proud to have taken a firm stand for what they believe in.”

More than 50 workers at Participation Lodge held picket lines for more than eight weeks at all three Participation Lodge locations: Holland Centre and St. Francis Place in Owen Sound and Lutheran Manor in Hanover.

Workers provide supports to people with physical and developmental disabilities both in residential settings and in the community.
