UBC child care workers vote to join BCGEU

'The new members have joined because they have seen the positive employer-union relationships the BCGEU maintains.' - Darryl Walker.

Vancouver (6 Aug. 2009) - Workers at five new child care centres at University of British Columbia (UBC) have voted to join the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE).

The new members will be covered by the existing collective agreement at UBC where the BCGEU already represents about 170 staff at established campus child care centres.

"I am happy to welcome more UBC child care staff to our union," says BCGEU president Darryl Walker. "The new members have joined because they have seen the positive employer-union relationships the BCGEU maintains."

The new centres offer 108 spaces for infants to toddlers. Four centres are part of a unique pilot project bringing together children of different age groups in the first licensed multi-age centres in the Lower Mainland.

BCGEU represents 3,000 early childhood educators and family child care providers across B.C. One of the aims of the union is to establish a universal public child care system with the help of the Coalition of Child Care Advocates of B.C.
