Young Worker’s Broken Arm Costs Company $50,000

Proper lifting and moving protocols could have avoided this accident.

Workers for a countertop company were moving marble and granite slabs in an outdoor storage yard. A young worker stood one of the slabs on its edge. The slab’s weight shifted, causing him to fall backwards. The slab also fell and pinned the worker against a storage rack, breaking his arm. The company pleaded guilty to a safety offence. The court fined it $50,000 [Marble Unlimited, Govt. News Release, Nov. 23, 2009].
