SGEU urges 22,000 members to boycott Sobey's stores

'It's important that we stand in solidarity.' - Bob Bymoen, SGEU president

Regina (6 Jan. 2006) - The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union (SGEU/NUPGE) is urging 22,000 members across the provionce to join with other trade unionists in boycotting all Sobey's stores.

"Let's make a collective New Year's resolution to join forces in support of the workers at Sobey's who have been on the picket line since September 11, 2005," says Bob Bymoen, SGEU president.

The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour Executive Council recently voted in favour of a boycott of the grocery store chain.

"We need to put economic pressure on Sobey's to help the workers there gain a fair and equitable settlement. It's important that we stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers at Sobey's to show the employer that an injury to one is an injury to all," says Bymoen.

The striking Sobey's employees are members of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Local 454 and work at the store on South Albert Street in Regina.

"We are asking our members to shop at other unionized stores and to support Sobey's workers by walking the picket line with them," adds Bymoen. NUPGE
