“Unions matter,” Clancy says. “They don't just matter to the people who belong to unions, they matter to every community in the country."
Ottawa (21 Oct. 2013) - "Fairness Works!" is a beautifully shot love letter about the good unions do that has already been seen by millions of Canadians via the major television networks.
Labour movement launches ads to highlight how unions benefit all Canadians
Now, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) has launched English and French versions on YouTube and is encouraging its 3.4 million members to watch and share the short video as broadly as possible online.
The spot is a centrepiece in the CLC's together, FAIRNESS WORKS project to remind all Canadians that “the labour movement is not just about decent jobs. It's about a better life, for everyone.”
Unions help improve life for everyone, says NUPGE President
James Clancy, National President of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) says it's exactly the kind of message that Canadians need to hear.
“Unions matter,” Clancy says. “They don't just matter to the people who belong to unions, they matter to every community in the country.
“As trade unionists, we know that. But it's time for us to stand up and remind all Canadians that unions matter,” he says. “This spot from the CLC is a great way for us to start doing that.”
The CLC message goes hand-in-hand with the work NUPGE has been doing on promoting labour rights as human rights. Most recently the union has launched a new Unions Matter campaign which showcases the way in which unions advocate for non-union members on serious issues of public policy.
Clancy says, "When unions speak out against cuts to EI or improvements to CPP, changes to health and safety regulations or in favour of a national child care program, we are not only advocating for our members but for people and communities across Canada. When we work together on these issues, we can make a big difference. That's what this project is all about, and we're proud to be a part of it."
The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is one of Canada's largest labour organizations with over 340,000 members. Our mission is to improve the lives of working families and to build a stronger Canada by ensuring our common wealth is used for the common good. NUPGE
