BCGEU correctional officers rally at Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre over lack of movement in bargaining

Corrections officers holding rally to bring attention to serious issues affecting working conditions.

Victoria (18 July 2012) - Corrections staff at Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre in Victoria will hold a rally outside the facility (4216 Wilkinson Road) on July 18 at 10:00 a.m. to draw public attention to the serious issues they’ve been trying to remedy since January in negotiations with the B.C. government.

These issues include prison overcrowding, which is making the job of corrections officers more dangerous than ever. Officers routinely face violent situations, including assaults.

The B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) has also put forward proposals to bring corrections officer salaries in line with officers in other parts of the country. Government negotiators have rejected these proposals so far.

The government has also rejected a proposal to use deputy sheriffs in traffic safety and enforcement, which the union estimates would generate $180-million dollars a year in reduced expenditures and additional revenue.
