BCGEU issues 72 hour strike notice to province

The union will be in a legal strike position on Monday, August 15, 2022 at 2:46 p.m..

Vancouver (12 Aug. 2022) - On August 12, 2022 the British Columbia General Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) issued 72-hours’ strike notice to the Public Service Agency (PSA). This notice covers the 33,000 members of the public service bargaining unit who work for direct government. The union will be in a legal strike position on Monday, Aug. 15 at 2:46 p.m..

Earlier in the week, the PSA had invited the union back to the bargaining table. Exploratory discussions were held, and BCGEU’s bargaining committee unanimously decided a return to the table would not be fruitful at this time.

The bargaining committee’s goal has always been to get a deal which provides appropriate cost of living protection for it members wages. That is still their goal, and they are ready to return to the table when the employer demonstrates that they are able to meet the union's demands.

Essential services details

After months of negotiation the BCGEU/NUPGE achieved an interim Essential Service Order from the BC Labour Relations Board.

This order was the final piece of the puzzle needed to action the strike mandate that members provided the union in June.
