BCGEU to represent majority of workers at Broadmead in new “poly-party” union

The Labour Relations Board decision is good news for BCGEU/NUPGE's new members, who will benefit from the union’s long experience at Broadmead Care.

Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE)Vancouver (25 June 2014) — In January of this year, the Broadmead Care Society applied to the British Columbia Labour Relations Board to consolidate three bargaining units into one. Following mediated talks, the B.C. Labour Relations Board has decided that workers at Broadmead Care will be represented by a new “poly-party” union made up of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU) and the B.C. Nurses Union (BCNU).

BCGEU/NUPGE to represent more workers at Broadmead Care Society

The BCGEU/NUPGE will continue to represent a majority of Broadmead Care workers, including health care workers, building maintenance, laundry, food service, administrative and information technology  workers.

Physiotherapists formerly represented by the Professional Employees’ Association (PEA) will now be represented by the BCGEU/NUPGE. The BCGEU/NUPGE will work to harmonize the current PEA and BCGEU/NUPGE collective agreements and to negotiate terms and conditions specific to the physiotherapists at Broadmead Care.

Registered nurses (RN), registered psychiatric nurses (RPN) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) will be represented by the BCNU. This decision by the LRB was based on evidence from members which showed LPN’s supported moving to representation by the BCNU.

The LRB decision is good news for BCGEU/NUPGE's new members who will benefit from our union’s long experience at Broadmead Care.

The recently renewed BCGEU/NUPGE collective agreement will remain in place. Amended terms for physiotherapists, RNs and RPNs, whose previous agreements were not renewed, will be added to the current agreement.

The BCGEU/NUPGE and the BCNU will continue to represent their respective members and will work together to negotiate a common collective agreement in five years, once the current agreement expires.

A meeting with BCGEU/NUPGE members at Broadmead Care will be held in the coming days to answer any questions.
