BCGEU video highlights 'The Twelve Cuts of Xmas'

Using YouTube to alert British Columbia citizens to the Campbell government's devastating cuts to public services.

Vancouver (21 Dec. 2009) - The British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) has found a creative way to draw seasonal attention to the devastating cuts in public services announced recently while lavishing spending on the upcoming Olympics.

"In the months before Christmas, the Liberals did all this," begins the video, entitled The Twelve Cuts of Xmas. Then it goes on - with BCGEU members singing each line in turn - to itemize how widespread and serious the cuts are for British Columbians and for the workers who provide them to the public. This is the list:

  • Slashed admin workers.
  • Closed detox centres.
  • Cuts to arts and culture.
  • Increased our workload.
  • Laid off lots of counsellors.
  • Fewer forest workers.
  • Still eight bucks an hour.
  • Look at those FIVE GOLDEN RINGS!
  • Shut down crisis lines.
  • Raised senors' fees.
  • Wiped out student grants.
  • And they brought in the HST!

"Happy holidays," the video concludes. "Here's to a better new year!"
