Fiscal responsibility should fund social responsibility

“We need to address the crisis in services for children at risk, ensure that seniors get the care they need, and invest in the public infrastructure that underpins our economy and creates good jobs." — Stephanie Smith, BCGEU President.

Vancouver (23 Feb. 2015) — Following the B.C. Throne Speech delivered on February 10, the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) is calling on the provincial government to use the predicted budget surplus to begin reinvesting in public services that have seen their funding slashed or frozen for more than a decade.

Time to invest in public services and infrastructure to care for the needs of British Columbians

“This afternoon’s Throne Speech presented a vision of our province with economic growth and job creation that many British Columbians simply will not recognize,”  says BCGEU President Stephanie Smith. “Fiscal responsibility is only valuable if it then allows government to deliver on its equally important social responsibilities.”

“It is time to invest in public services and infrastructure to create the province the Lieutenant Governor described in her Throne Speech,” says Smith. “We need to address the crisis in services for children at risk, ensure that seniors get the care they need, and invest in the public infrastructure that underpins our economy and creates good jobs. These are investments that will pay dividends in the months and years ahead.”
