HSAA negotiates stronger severance package

Severance packages will be calculated on the basis of 1.5 weeks of pay for each year of service to a maximum of 52 weeks.

Edmonton (13 Oct. 2009) - The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) has negotiated an enhanced "voluntary exit" letter of understanding on behalf of members covered by its collective agreement with the province.

The terms will see employees offered a severance package calculated on the basis of 1.5 weeks of pay for each year of service to a maximum of 52 weeks.

"This is a considerable improvement over the employers initial proposal of one week of pay for each year of service to a maximum of 26 weeks," the union says. "This letter of understanding does not include members employed with Covenant Health. They are currently reviewing a separate program that may be adopted for Covenant employees."
