HSABC collects more than 103,270 products for Tampon Tuesday

This shattered the union's goal of raising 30,000 products to match the total collected across the lower mainland last year.

Vancouver (04 May 2018) — Periods are a fact of life. Monthly menstruation products are a necessity. And nobody should have to pick between feeding their family and being able to afford basic hygiene products. Yet far too many people — especially those living in poverty — simply can’t afford them.

HSABC/NUPGE's Tampon Tuesday campaign a huge success

Between March 1 and March 20, Health Sciences Association of B.C. (HSABC/NUPGE) participated in the Tampon Tuesday campaign in partnership with the United Way and local community organizations. Led by the union's Women's Committee, members ran Tampon Tuesday campaigns collecting tampons, pads and diva cups in Comox, New Westminster, Prince George, Nelson, Terrace and Vancouver. Members also campaigned to  stomp out menstrual stigma, highlighting connections between access to menstrual products and the stigmatization of periods.

The response was incredible. Across the province, HSABC/NUPGE collected over 103,269 menstrual products.

This shattered the union's goal of raising 30,000 products to match the total collected across the lower mainland last year.

HSABC staff members raised over $10K for bulk buy of products

HSABC staff, through their staff union, Health Sciences Association Staff Union (HSASU), created an internal campaign whereby staff teams formed in friendly competition. In 2 short weeks they fundraised over $10,000 to support a bulk buy of over 70,000 menstrual products.

And this year was just a start.

At the 2018 Convention, HSABC/NUPGE delegates from across the province voted on a resolution to support the Tampon Tuesday campaign as a standing campaign of the union.
