Instructors at Cape Breton University ratify contract

Joan Jessome, president of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE)Halifax (1 Feb. 2011) - Instructors and laboratory technologists at Cape Breton University have voted 100% to ratify a new collective agreement negotiated with the institution by their union, the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees' Union (NSGEU/NUPGE).

“We are very pleased to have reached this agreement and to have reached it so quickly,” says NSGEU president Joan Jessome.

“It took two days of hard work by a focused and strategic bargaining committee and their employee relations officer, Tina Webber, to achieve the improvements our members wanted to see in their collective agreement.”

The agreement is retroactive to Nov. 1, 2010 and expires on Oct. 31, 2012. It includes a lump sum payment of $350 included in the employee’s wages in addition to a 1.5% increase in the first year and a 1% increase in the second year.

There were other improvements including increases related to professional development, pensions and severance.
