Manitoba community college workers voting on offer

Two institutions – Red River College and Assiniboine Community College – respond with settlement offer after employees take strike vote.

Winnipeg (6 July 2010) - A tentative settlement has been reached in the dispute between two Manitoba community colleges and the Manitoba and Government and General Employees Union (MGEU/NUPGE).

"After a year without a new contract, Red River College and Assiniboine Community College presented the MGEU bargaining committee with a settlement offer to take to members for a ratification vote," MGEU reports.

"Since securing a strike mandate from ACC/RRC members in June, the bargaining committee met four times with the employer through conciliation. Those deliberations resulted in considerable improvements in a number of key areas," the union says.

The colleges have now presented an offer that both sides have agreed to present to employees at ratification meetings this week. Mail-in ballots are being distributed to approximately 1,600 union members – along with details of the proposed settlement.

"To give members the opportunity to get clarification on the offer, information meetings are being scheduled in Winnipeg and Brandon," the union adds. "Members can cast their ballot at the meeting in their area or by mail."
