NAPE President addresses tax fairness at Public Administration luncheon

The speech entitled “Tax cuts, political ideology and corporate profit: Who’s footing the bill” will examine the current economic situation in Canada.

St. John's (28 Mar. 2011) - Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) President Carol Furlong will address the issue of tax fairness at a luncheon sponsored by the Institute of Public Administration of Canada on March 30, 2011.

The speech entitled “Tax cuts, political ideology and corporate profit: Who’s footing the bill” will examine the current economic situation in Canada. “In keeping with the Federal Conservative’s vision of making Canada a low-tax jurisdiction, they have been steadfastly moving forward with cutting taxes on corporate profits. By 2015, under this plan, the share of federal government programs paid for by corporate income tax is estimated to shrink to 12% from 21% in 2000.”

“Although it is suggested these decisions are in the best long-term interests of the country resulting in spurring economic activity and actually increasing corporate tax revenue,” argues Furlong, “this plan is swayed heavily by ideological political agendas and corporate lobbying which will inevitably result in working Canadians footing the bill.”

NAPE/NUPGE has been an active part of the National Union's All Together Now! campaign launched in June 2010 in support of quality public services and promoting tax fairness. The campaign has welcomed over 6,000 supporters across the country and held events in communities highlighting the lack of mental health services to the corporate tax giveaways by the federal government. More actions are beings scheduled for April and May.
