NAPE's 18th biennial convention set for June 25-27

'Pride in our members - Pride in our union.'

Carol Furlong, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE)St. John’s (25 June 2009) -  More than 400 delegates, observers and staff will gather at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s June 25-27 for the 18th biennial convention of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE).

The theme this year is Pride in Our Members - Pride in Our Union.

"The  convention is an opportunity for NAPE members from throughout the province to gather in a single place to debate and vote on resolutions that will give our union direction for the next two years," says NAPE president Carol Furlong.

"It is also a time to celebrate our accomplishments and to show our appreciation for the many activists who make our union work so well.”

Highlights of convention will include:

  • President’s address to convention, Thursday, June 25, 10:00 a.m.
  • Secretary-Treasurer’s report, Thursday, June 25, 2:00 p.m.
  • Launch of NAPE’s new anthem, Thursday, June 25, 2:25 p.m.
  • Tribute to NAPE members killed on the job, Friday, June 26, 9:45 a.m.
  • Presentation on human trafficking, Friday, June 26, 2:00 p.m.

James Clancy

One of the keynote speakers at the convention will be James Clancy, president of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE).

Clancy will discuss the current economic recession, its causes, what has been done so far to address it and what still needs to be done. Specifically, he will talk about measures that need to be taken by the federal government to improve Employment Insurance (EI) and retirement security and he will also given an overview of NUPGE's national campaign, A people's response to the economic crisis.

"The campaign is bringing Canadians from all walks of life together to discuss the current crisis and the future of the country," Clancy says.

"It's a way for busy but concerned people to make their voices heard and to provide governments with a better picture of the real effects of the recession on ordinary Canadians. It’s also a way for us to ensure that governments find solutions that work for everybody, every day."
