N.S. health care strike ends after just two hours

Tentative settlement affects 4,100 workers at 33 rural hospitals across the province.

Halifax (18 Jan. 2010) - A strike by 4,100 health care workers at mainly rural hospitals across Nova Scotia ended with good news after just two hours early Monday when a tentative settlement was reached.

A total of 33 hospitals were affected, all outside the Halifax area. However, a walkout was expected to put Halifax hospitals under heavy pressure in the event of full-scale job action.

Employees outside the Halifax area are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Many of the workers in the capital district are represented by the Nova Scotia Government and Services Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE).

Details of the settlement will be released as ratification meetings are arranged for all workers affected. The main issue in the dispute was a request by rural workers for a salary increase to maintain parity with their counterparts in the Halifax area.
