NSGEU Day! Celebrating 55 years of unity

NSGEU/NUPGE thanks its members for their contributions in the workplace, in the community and in the union.

Halifax (19 April 2013) – Members of the Novat Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) are celebrating NSGEU Day in honour of the 55th anniversary of the union. On April 19, 1958, the union held its founding Convention as the Nova Scotia Civil Service Association. At that time, just 3,200 civil servants delivered a range of public services throughout this province.

Today, NSGEU/NUPGE has grown in both size and scope, now representing almost 30,000 women and men who provide invaluable public services throughout the province. Our members work in wide variety of settings: hospitals and laboratories, liquor stores, universities and public schools, just to name a few. All are dedicated to delivering quality public services to their fellow Nova Scotians.

NSGEU/NUPGE members have faced our fair share of challenges over our 55 years together, weathering many changes, including battles with past governments who were determined to undermine the strength of workers. Fortunately, in the past few years, NSGEU/NUPGE and its members have also made great strides in laying groundwork to protect workers throughout the province, such as establishing first-contract legislation. Members have seen increases in the minimum wage, positive changes to pharmacare and affordable housing programs, and job creation with the development of the JobsHere strategy.

Heading into the 55th year, the NSGEU/NUPGE is still growing. The union has launched a new online home (www.nsgeu.ca), increased its presence on social media to better reach members and the public and are getting ready to move into a new building – a new home for members – this fall. The Biennial Convention is being held from May 8 to 11 and members are looking forward to debating resolutions and the new direction that are surely to emerge.

On this anniversary, the NSGEU/NUPGE leadership wish to thank its our members for the valuable work that they do and for the contributions they make in the workplace, community  and the union.
