OpenMedia.ca looking for personal stories about cellular service in Canada

Share your stories about your cellular experience with OpenMedia.ca

openmedia.caOttawa (10 Jan. 2012) - The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), in The Cost of Communicating, has documented how the big three cell phone companies are not providing affordable services to the Canadian public. Now OpenMedia.ca, a non-profit organization that safeguards the possibilities of the open and affordable Internet and working towards establishing informed and participatory digital policy, is asking for personal accounts of poor treatment and service by cellular companies.

OpenMedia.ca is preparing a response to big telecom’s stranglehold on the cell phone market in Canada. OpenMedia.ca representatives met with the Industry Minister’s office last year and made it very clear that Canadians expect them to fix our broken telecom market. They seemed to be listening a the time but now signs are indicating that the government may be about to hand off newly freed wireless spectrum to the big telecom companies, thereby killing independent options for cell phone/mobile Internet service.

To ensure the public has a say in the digital future within this country, Canadians need to be aware and engaged. It’s a matter of political will—government will step up and do the right thing if they know people are watching. OpenMedia.ca wants to know what you think is the simplest and most effective way to engage all Canadians in this issue. You can share your opinion by telling them:

  • What is it about the Big Telecom-controlled cell phone market that concerns you most?
  • Do you have any personal stories of price-gouging or bad customer service from cell phone companies?

Your answers will help shape the work to effect change in the cell phone market. Together we can prepare an action that will work.

You can share you responses on Facebook, Twitter (@openmedia_ca), Google+, or Reddit. You can also email contact@openmedia.ca.
