PEIUPSE encourages all to attend pension rally

“We can stop the drastic cuts to our pension by working together!”  - Debbie Bovyer, PEIUPSE President.

Charlottetown (14 Nov. 2013) - The President of the PEI Union of Public Sector Employees (PEIUPSE/NUPGE), Debbie Bovyer says, “It’s not too late for the government to change its mind about implementing severe cuts to the pensions of over 13,000 retirees and public sector workers in Prince Edward Island.”

Pension rally to be held on November 15 to protest severe cuts

President Bovyer says, “The union is gearing up for the pension rally taking place on Friday, November 15, 2013.  All are invited to join the rally which begins at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel on Queen Street in Charlottetown at 4:30 p.m.  The march to Province House from the Delta will commence at 4:45 p.m. with a full police escort.”

“People realize that their economic futures are at stake, and that’s why they are planning to participate,” says Bovyer.  “We can stop the drastic cuts to our pension by working together!”

PEIUPSE/NUPGE has proposed an alternative to the government's plan to undermine retirement security

President Bovyer says, “The union’s Alternative Proposal for the pension is fair to workers, retirees, taxpayers and the economy. Government has not been able to show why they are rejecting our plan. The union proposal for pension reform would immediately remove 50% of the pension liability from government and taxpayers, and would fully fund the pension to 100% within three years.”

“The government’s plan is to overfund the pension to an unprecedented level of 122%. No one understands why they are doing this as it’s unnecessary, and can only be achieved by implementing severe cuts.  In fact, the government’s own policy on the funding of the pension says that it must be funded to at least the 90% level, and provides government a twenty year period to achieve this funding status.  So why is government insisting on overfunding the pension by 32% more than their own policy calls for, on the backs of retirees, public service workers and all Islanders?”
