SFL boycotting XL Foods over Moose Jaw lockout

200 employees locked out since September at plant in Moose Jaw.

Regina (8 Feb. 2010) - The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) has called for a boycott of Alberta-based XL Foods to support 200 workers locked out by the company at its beef processing plant in Moose Jaw.

The workers have been locked out since September when they returned from a five-month company shutdown. They have been without a contract since the end of January and no new negotiations have been scheduled. The employees are members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW Canada).

"XL Foods locked out those workers to put pressure on them to accept concessions at the bargaining table," the SFL says.

"If you are at a restaurant, ask where the beef is coming from; if the answer is XL Foods, consider some other product."

The federation is also urging consumers to make their views known to local businesses who use XL products. The company also operates plants in Calgary and Brooks, Alta.
