Sign the petition for quality affordable child care in Canada

Sign the petition calling on the government of Canada to work with the provinces and territories to increase the number of good quality and affordable child care spaces in Canada.

Ottawa (10 Feb. 2014) – Canadian families struggling to find quality child care are all too aware of the lack of available spaces. This coupled with the high cost of child care, often as much as a mortgage payment, have many parents facing difficult choices between working and staying home.

NDP MP organizes petition calling for the federal government to increase the number of child care spaces

This is why New Democrat Member of Parliament Jinny Sims has launched a petition calling for federal leadership on child care. The petition calls on the government of Canada to work with the provinces and territories to increase the number of good quality and affordable child care spaces in Canada.

The petition highlights the following facts:

  • Quality child care and early learning can be the foundations for lifelong success that our children deserve
  • Studies confirm access to child care boosts women’s participation in the workforce and strengthens our economy as a whole – with every dollar spent returning two or more
  • Canada ranks last among comparable countries when it comes to public spending on child care and early learning as a percentage of GDP – leading to a critical lack of quality, affordable spaces

NUPGE supports universal early learning and child care program in Canada

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) and its Advisory Committee on Women’s Issues have lobbied for many years for a universal early learning and child care program in Canada. As part of the National Union’s All Together Now! Campaign for public services, our Women 4 Change are continuing to work hard to make child care a priority for all levels of government. The National Union is also part of the multi-union and child care advocates’ campaign Rethink Child Care  which also stresses the need for a high quality child care program.

The National Union is encouraging its members and all Canadians to add their voice to the growing number of people who believe our children should come first!  Please sign the It’s time for quality child care that’s affordable for families petition. You can also share your support on Facebook and on Twitter.
