Tentative NSGEU deal for Cape Breton police

'The union welcomes the achievement of a tentative agreement without having to go through binding arbitration.' - Joan Jessome.

Halifax (10 Aug. 2009) – The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) has reached a tentative agreement with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality on behalf of Cape Breton police members in Local 1995.

The agreement was negotiated in advance of binding arbitration hearings set for Aug. 12-13. The major issue was wages. Details of the agreement will not be released before members have a chance to vote on it. A ratification meeting has been tentatively scheduled for August 18.

Negotiations began in October 2008 and continued until February 2009. Conciliation efforts began in April.

“The union welcomes the achievement of a tentative agreement without having to go through binding arbitration," says NSGEU president Joan Jessome. "We appreciate the extra efforts made by both sides to reach this agreement.”
