Delegates gather in Halifax from across Nova Scotia for union's biennial convention.
Halifax (6 May 2009) - The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) is holding its biennial convention this week in Halifax.
Delegates from across the province will gather Wednesday night at the Nova Scotia Hotel and will meet until Saturday. The theme of this year's convention is Your Voices, Your Rights, Our Strength.
The keynote speaker (at 10:45 a.m. Friday) will be Larry Brown, the national secretary-treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE).
Other speakers will include Patricia Bishop, who will speak on the economic, social and political payoff of buying locally and also talk about the Nova Scotia ‘Buy Local Challenge’; former NSGEU President Dave Peters; Rick Clarke, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL), and Betty Bryenton, RN, who will talk about a campaign called 'Buy-a-net', which is focused on strategies to lower the spread of malaria worldwide.
The convention will also debate policy resolutions, hear committee reports and elect officers. Voting will take place on Saturday morning.
NSGEU will also unveil a new logo and website on Wednesday evening.
The union represents over 26,000 women and men who provide quality public services across the province.
