NUPGE’s Social Justice Solidarity Fund contributes to earthquake relief in Nepal

“We are also encouraging our members to support relief efforts for the people of Nepal struck by this weekend’s massive earthquake." — James Clancy, NUPGE National President.

Ottawa (28 April ) — The 340,000-member National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is contributing $20,000 to support families and communities recovering from the devastating earthquake in Nepal on April 25.

NUPGE splits donation between Oxfam Canada and the Canadian Red Cross

"We would like to express our condolences and our solidarity with the citizens of Nepal who have been affected by this earthquake. We are responding to the calamity with a contribution from NUPGE’s Social Justice Solidarity Fund toward the relief and recovery effort," said James Clancy, NUPGE National President. “Our donation will be split between Oxfam Canada and the Canadian Red Cross.”

Oxfam Canada is delivering clean water and sanitation supplies to the tens of thousands of people who are currently living in makeshift shelters.  The Red Cross is working on the ground assisting in search and rescue efforts and administering first aid to the injured. The Red Cross blood bank in Kathmandu is also providing blood supplies to the main medical facilities in the capital.

Canadian government will match donations until May 25

“We are also encouraging our members to support relief efforts for the people of Nepal struck by this weekend’s massive earthquake," added Clancy.  The Canadian government announced that it will match donations from individual Canadians until May 25, 2015.  You can make your donation to Oxfam Canada by clicking here or to the Canadian Red Cross by clicking here.

Founded in 2007, NUPGE’s Social Justice Solidarity Fund focuses primarily on domestic and international emergency humanitarian relief and on economic and social development projects in developing countries.  Since the fund was established, it has contributed over $500,000 to some 60 projects in Canada and around the world.
