New Nfld. council on mental health and addictions

Reports directly to the minister of health in the cabinet of the government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

St. John's (30 June 2010) - The government of Newfoundland and Labrador has established a new provincial body to deal with mental health and addictions issues.

The Provincial Mental Health and Addictions Advisory Council will report directly to the health minister by providing advice on key mental health and addictions matters.

Vince Withers, chairperson and founding member of the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, becomes the first chairperson on the council. Dr. Nizar Ladha, a forensic and general psychiatrist and president-elect of the Canadian Psychiatric Association, will serve as vice-chair.

Other members include:

  • Peter Ralph, chairperson of Consumers Health Awareness Network Newfoundland and Labrador (CHANNAL).
  • Sheldon Pollett, executive director, Choices for Youth.
  • Ron Fitzpatrick, executive director, Turnings, an addictions support group that works with offenders.
  • Mary Walsh, actor and social activist.
  • Michelle Kinney, deputy minister of Nunatsiavut Government.
  • Des Coombs, regional Director of Mental Health and Addictions, Central Health.
  • Jocelyn Greene, executive director of Stella Burry Community Services.
  • George Skinner, executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association-Newfoundland and Labrador Division.
  • Lisa Goudie, regional manager of Mental Health and Addictions, Western Health.
