NSGEU brief calls for major national pension reforms

Brief calls for higher CPP and GIS benefits and a national pension insurance program.

Halifax (21 Sept. 2010) - The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) has presented a brief to the provincial government calling for significant pension reforms and urging the province to help bring them about.

"NSGEU supports an increase in the contribution rate for Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits, which will allow for a greater replacement ratio for all Canadians," the submission says.

"We support an increase in the benefit received by low income seniors under the Guaranteed Income
Supplement (GIS) as well as a national pension insurance program. We ask for your support of these measures and that of the Government of Canada and other provincial/territorial governments to ensure retirement income security to current and future retirees."

The brief was presented in response to a provincial finance department discussion paper entitled, Mechanisms for Enhancing The Retirement Income System in Canada.
