Settlement with Burnaby Children’s Centres Society

Wage increases totalling 9% by 2014 and numerous other contract improvements.

Vancouver (10 June 2010) - Members of the British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE)  who work for the Burnaby Children’s Centres Society have ratified a tentative agreement on a new contract ending March 31, 2014.

Highlights of the agreement include:

Wage increase: 2% retroactive to April 1, 2010; 2% in 2011; 2% in 2012 and 3% in 2013. Increases to occur every six months.
New on-call language: the employer agreed to assign team leaders on-call duties. Leaders will receive an employer paid cell phone and a premium of $40 per week.
Vacation entitlement: five bonus days in the 10th and 20th year of continuous service and every fifth year of continuous service thereafter.
Increase to the vehicle allowance.

The union and employer also agreed to a number of language changes. Among them:
New language for assigning additional hours to part-time employees and casual availability.
Language on vacation preference and scheduling to give junior employees more opportunities to schedule vacation during prime vacation times.
New language in the bereavement leave clause, allowing members to access banked vacation or overtime for additional leave.
