Ottawa – Members from Components of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) will be meeting in Ottawa on September 27 and 28 to discuss major issues affecting workers in institutional correctional services and youth facilities.

Members travel from across the country to spend two days discussing such issues as occupational violence, wages and benefits, psychological injury and trauma, staffing, recruitment, retention, overcrowding, and working conditions.

The meeting is timed every year to coincide with the Canadian Police and Peace Officer’s National Memorial Service held on Parliament Hill. The 47th Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day

In 1998, the federal government officially proclaimed the last Sunday of each September as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. On this day, members of the public can express their deep appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices made every day to keep our communities safe and honour those who have fallen on the job.

The National Memorial Day Service is organized by the Canadian Police Association (CPPA), the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and the Canadian Peace Officers’ Memorial Association (CPOMA).
