December 1 2025
This December 1, World AIDS Day, the global community stands at a critical moment, as governments are following the Trump government’s lead and cutting back on international aid, it is more important than ever to take a stand for global solidarity.
NUPGE is in solidarity with all those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. We reaffirm our support for universal access to prevention, treatment and care, crucial tools in the fight to stop the spread of HIV and save lives.
We are, therefore, deeply alarmed by the decision of the federal government, under Prime Minister Carney, to cut funding for global health initiatives, including the global HIV response, as recently reported by the head of UNAIDS. This cut would be the first ever cut by Canada to the Global Fund, a program to fight infectious diseases in the world’s poorest countries.
This cut comes at a time when communities around the world desperately need support to continue access to life-saving medications, prevention tools, and health services following the very drastic gutting of support by the Trump administration.
NUPGE calls on the Carney government to reverse these funding cuts immediately, reaffirm Canada’s commitment to global solidarity, so that patients continue to have access to the medicines and services that keep them alive.
NUPGE stands in solidarity with those living with HIV/AIDS and all people living with infectious diseases and requiring support for treatments and therapies to deal with their health conditions.
