NUPGE is in full solidarity with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) as they face yet another attack on their labour rights. Last year, CUPW went on a national strike to demand what all workers deserve: fairer wages and benefits, improved sick leave, and safer working conditions. CUPW has been fighting against Canada Post’s attempts to expand precarious work and introduce two-tier contracts.
In late 2024, the federal government used an obscure provision in the Canada Labour Code to intervene in—and effectively end—the CUPW strike. Now, the federal Minister of Jobs and Families is forcing CUPW members to vote on Canada Post’s latest offer, at the request of the employer.
This is a direct attack on workers’ collective bargaining rights and on the right to strike. It is not just a threat to CUPW members. An injury to one is an injury to all. If governments increasingly abuse their powers to intervene in collective bargaining process and strikes, all our rights are at risk.
CUPW members are also fighting for the future of the public postal service. Canada Post is pursuing drastic cuts—closing post offices, ending door-to-door delivery, outsourcing, and even introducing privatization. This will hurt the quality and accessibility of services, particularly for people in rural and Indigenous communities, and for seniors and people with mobility needs.
This story is all too familiar. We face similar threats of austerity, privatization, and erosion of public services in the sectors and provinces where we work.
We are in solidarity with CUPW members in their fight to defend workers’ rights. We join them in opposing any more cuts or privatization and support their demand to expand public postal services that play a vital role in our communities across the country.
