Trump’s Tariffs: An economic attack on Canada—The labour movement will fight back

March 5 2025

The announcement of new U.S. tariffs against Canada represents nothing less than a declaration of economic war on our country, our jobs, and our communities. This reckless decision threatens the livelihoods of countless workers and jeopardizes our economic stability from coast to coast to coast.

I know our members across the country are mobilized against this attack on our country. I want you to know that like you, NUPGE is determined to face this challenge head-on.

Our union, alongside the broader labour movement, has always been at the forefront of defending workers, industries, and the principles of fairness. We know how to fight, and we know how to lead.

For generations, union activists and members have fought to improve working conditions, promote equity, and advance diversity and inclusion—both in our workplaces and in our communities. Today, these values are under attack, not just in Donald Trump’s America, but also here at home where governments have been misusing the notwithstanding clause to weaken labour rights and roll back hard-won protections for marginalized communities.

Today, our fight for equity and against hate is more urgent than ever. And now, it extends to defending our country’s economy against this external threat.

Trump’s tariffs appear designed to inflict maximum harm on Canada, hitting workers, industries and communities alike. We understand the economic ripple effects will be felt everywhere, including in all our public services and our public health care system —key pillars of equity and affordability that Canadians built to help support a just society. We must not allow Trump’s attacks to undermine our commitments to each other as a nation, especially in times of economic uncertainty that the new tariffs will undoubtedly create.

There is no question that these are exceptionally challenging times, but we have never backed down from an important fight. Our union stands with all Canadians in this critical moment for our country, our sovereignty, and our values.

We know NUPGE members from coast to coast are doing their part to support one another and defend our country. We will keep you informed about the National Union’s actions, as well as initiatives from our Component unions and the broader labour movement. Together, we are mobilizing for a strong, strategic response to this economic aggression against Canada.

In solidarity,

Bert Blundon, NUPGE President
