International Youth Day (IYD) occurs annually on August 12. IYD is an awareness day created by the United Nations to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing young people around the world. It also celebrates their role as essential partners in achieving sustainable development.

The theme for IYD 2026 is “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”. It reflects the reality that, while young people’s lives are shaped by diverse national and local contexts, their aspirations for dignity, opportunity, participation, and a sustainable future remain remarkably similar regardless of borders, income levels, or circumstances.

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) affirms its commitment to building a future where every young person can thrive. This future includes affordable, publicly owned housing, a fairer taxation system that makes the mega wealthy pay their fair share, a society free from all discrimination and hatred, and an end to the cost-of-living crisis.
